Bracket-by-Bracket Breakdown
The U.S. uses a progressive tax system - only the income within each bracket
is taxed at that rate. Your entire income is never taxed at your top rate.
⚠️
Estimates only - real taxes will differ.
This calculator applies the 2026 standard deduction and federal brackets only.
It does not account for state or local income taxes, FICA (Social Security & Medicare),
itemized deductions, tax credits, capital gains, investment income, AMT,
or any other adjustments. Consult a tax professional for advice specific to your situation.

How It's Calculated
Standard Deduction: Subtracted from gross income before any tax is applied.
2026 amounts: $16,100 (Single), $32,200 (Married Filing Jointly), $24,150 (Head of Household).
Progressive Brackets: Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that rate.
Earning $60,000 as a single filer does not mean all $60,000 is taxed at 22% -
only the slice of income between $12,400–$50,400 is taxed at 22%.
Effective Rate: Total federal tax ÷ Gross income.
Almost always lower than your marginal (top bracket) rate because lower brackets
cover the first dollars of income.
Marginal Rate: The rate that applies to your last dollar of income.
Useful for evaluating raises, freelance income, or deductions.
Tax brackets shown are 2026 IRS figures (IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32). Brackets adjust annually for inflation.
This tool does not include state taxes, FICA, or any credits or deductions beyond
the standard deduction.
